Samsung Galaxy M40 In-depth review a perfect Smartphone with Great Aesthetics

South Korea Tech giant Samsung introduced its M-series of smartphones in January exclusively for online sale in India. The company’s aim is to compete Chinese smartphone manufacturer who have captured the whole mid-range segment. Pitched for millennials, the previous M-series smartphones – the Galaxy M10, Galaxy M20 and Galaxy M30 – have huge screens, big-capacity batteries, decent cameras and a good multimedia-handling capability.Samsung Galaxy M40

Galaxy M40 is Fourth smartphone in this series, the Galaxy M40 is a newly launched midrange smartphone with several segment-first features. Priced at Rs 19,990, it is the only smartphone in its segment to support a punch-hole display just like Galaxy S10e it is something seen only in premium smartphones until now. It also boasts the on-screen sound technology that turns the entire screen into an earpiece speaker, making it easier to answer calls.

Key Specification of Galaxy M40

Design

The Galaxy M40, similar in looks to its siblings M10, M20, M30, it has a reflective glass-like back with a premium dual-tone finish which we have not yet seen on previous M series smartphones. Its chassis is of the same color as the back panel. The glossy nature of the phone’s back makes it susceptible to fingerprints and it gets smudged easily not something you want if you are not in the habit of using a back cover and it’s a glass on the other end so its recommended to use coves as it makes it more fragile device. There is a fingerprint scanner on the back of the smartphone and on the top left of back rear cameras are placed the middle sensor of camera is kind of glowing which give is all together new look.

The front side, however, has a different profile altogether. The punch-hole display looks modern and complements the phone’s overall design language. It is some thing we see on Samsung Galaxy S10e but on that phone it was on right side on Galaxy M40 its on left. From top to bottom all together there are very thin bezel and very thin chin at bottom.

Display

The Galaxy M40 has a 6.3-inch thin film transistor (TFT) screen of a fullHD+ resolution stretched in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, resilient enough to protect the screen from accidental scratches, but still in this modern age we are at least expecting Gorilla Glass 5 and an AMOLED panel but here company has done cost cutting.Samsung Galaxy M40

But still phones screen is great and has enough brightness to stay legible in bright outdoors and it renders vivid colors and satisfactory viewing angles. However, since it lacks deep black levels of the AMOLED display, the overall contrast is satisfactory at best, not class leading.

Like other M-series smartphones, the M40 has a Widevine L1 certification for streaming high-definition multimedia content available on over-the-top (OTT) platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos.

Camera

The Galaxy M40 has a triple-camera setup on the back featuring a 32-megapixel primary camera of an f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 5MP depth sensor.Samsung Galaxy M40
The rear camera is backed by artificial intelligence-based auto scene recognition, which is not as per the standards and sometimes it doesn’t work as it should be but overall it does its job may be software update can fix this issue.

The primary camera is a capable unit and works well in both bright and low light conditions as well as in indoor artificial lighting. The ultra-wide lens is also a potent one, but it struggles in low light due to a smaller aperture. Interestingly, both the lenses are available in the photo and video modes this is a thing I like the most giving wide angel lense access to video capture, making it easier to select a lens of choice before shooting. The 5MP depth sensor camera works very well and does its job very well in portrait mode.

On the front Galaxy M40 features 16MP camera placed in the punch-hole area on its front. The front camera also has wide-angle and regular modes to choose from. It works best to take group selfies and the front camera is pretty amazing as its very hard to get a wide angel lens in front camera there are not lot of phone in market which have this much of fidelity.

CPU

The Galaxy M40 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 system-on-chip, mated with 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. The Snapdragon 675 is a octa-core processor made on 64 bit 11nm technology, on the GPU side it has Adreno 612 on the performance side it performs quite well as considering it as a mid-segment processor, it performs very well.Samsung Galaxy M40

The phone boots the Android Pie operating system-based One user interface. A power-packed performer, it handles everyday operations and heavy-duty tasks with ease. Gaming experience is also smooth and the phone keeps the thermals in control. It does warm up a bit, but that happens mostly after extended gaming sessions and when the phone is on charge.

Battery

Galaxy M40 is Powered by 3,500 mAh battery, which is 1,500 mAh less in capacity than the M10 and M20 ones. Yet, the phone delivers decent on-battery time of around 10 hours on normal usage. It supports 15W fast-charging through the supplied charger, which replenishes the battery in around two-and-a-half hours.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M40 is a power-packed performer, with a premium design, Great camera performance, an operating system optimized for one-hand use, and a decent battery. Consider the M40 if you need a reliable smartphone for casual gaming, versatile imaging and all-round multimedia capabilities. As all above are good point of this smartphone as we would really appreciate if Samsung could implement the AMOLED panel instead of IPS display, but overall choosing this time Snapdragon processor is the right decision of the company as it is better than any of Exynos chipset which we find in this price point.
